Defeating the High Tatras
The High Tatras is a real paradise in the community of the hikers. If somebody was already there, and climbed one of the mountains of the High Tatras, or “just” absorbed the breath-taking atmosphere of the landscape, we think that he/she will definitely addicted of the High Tatras.
The mountains cached us aswell, we’re going there in every year. We had an amazing opportunity for visiting and taking a hike to the top of the Koprovsky Stit.
It’s 2367 metres high, and it can be reach from the Slovakian side of the Tatras.
The starting point is Štrbské pleso. We recommend you to start your hike quite early, we started our way at 7.00 A.M. From here, a relatively easy, wooded way, covered by some rocks tooks us to the Poprad Lake.
In front of the lake, at the junction we have to choose the blue line. From here, it takes 3 hours, 3 hours 15 mins to reach the top. For a short time the same way are going to the Rysy, one of the highest and famous top of the mountains. After a short wooded easy upward, the way will fork, the red line will go up to the Rysy, but we have to stay in the blue line.
For a short time, our way will descend a bit, crossing some brooks, but really soon, the descending way will transform into a rocky, steep uphill, at some moment we have to use our hands too. Remember that, anytime if we look back, the view and the landscape will forget us the incidental hardships.
After the uphill, the path will turn into a flat valley, and soon we’ll arrive to the Veľké Hincovo pleso. The lake is the biggest and deepest mountain lake of glacial origin in the High Tatras, Slovakia. The maximum depth is 53 metres.
From the lake, our way continues just to up, on a grassy, rocky serpentine road section, and we’ll reach the Vyšné Kôprovské saddle, which is already 2180 meters high.
The top of the mountain can be reached by the red line, on a rocky, rubble-covered, very steep, clinging and cautious road. If you are enough brave and well-prepared, you can complete the path.
We were excessively lucky until this point, until we reached the saddle. All day we had very nice weather, bright sunshine, a bit unusual warm day in the end of October. When we reached the saddle, the weather turned foggy and windy, which made our challenge to a hard trial. But the bad conditions didn’t took away our determination, we went on up, as we did at the beginning our day.
When we reached the top, we didn’t seen anything due to the fog, but we were really proud and joyful for succeeding to reach the top.
It is a hard trial and definitely not recommended for beginners, but it’s also special experience, hiking in the end of October, hiking in an autumn day from the summer warm into the winter cold in one day.
During the day we met a lot of another hikers, climbers, so this path is also well-known and famous.
Path: Beginning from Štrbské pleso, crossing the Poprad lake and the Vyšné Kôprovské saddle.
Duration: 4 hours from Štrbské pleso one way
Total climb: 991 metres
The easiest way to travel to the High Tatras, is traveling by car, but if you come farther, there is an airport in Poprad.
